94% of companies do not manage energy. Monitoring is not yet control

More than a third of the market already has digital oversight of energy. And yet 94% of companies do not actively control their consumption profile. Those two numbers ought to agree — and the fact that they do not says everything about the first round of "energy management" products.

Two numbers that ought to agree

It is worth setting two pieces of market data side by side.

The first: around 15% of companies have an Energy Management System deployed, a further 14% have a BMS, 13% SCADA and 18% advanced analytics with AI/ML. In total, then, more than a third of the market has some form of digital oversight of energy.

The second: 94% of companies do not automatically manage their consumption profile. Which means that only 6% actively control their consumption.

These numbers ought to agree. They do not. What does that mean? That the market has already bought the first round of products in the "energy management" category — and those products did not deliver what they promised.

Monitoring exposes the problem but does not solve it

More data points to the same thing. An estimated 15–25% of energy consumption in factories falls in hours when the plant is officially not working: weekends, nights, shutdowns. Compressors idling. Air conditioning holding temperature in empty halls.

At the same time, consumption falls by an average of 12–18% in the first year after monitoring is deployed.

Set those two numbers against each other. 15–25% goes to waste when nobody is working. After monitoring is deployed, 12–18% comes off. Where did the missing percentage points go? Exactly where they were. Monitoring exposed the problem — but to solve it, somebody has to remember, every day, every weekend, for years, to switch off the compressor or the ventilation. In practice they remember for the first month after go-live.

The second round: closing the loop

This is energy management in the version the market has been selling for the past decade. The first purchasing round went into dashboards — attractive charts that display the problem without closing it.

The second round is going (and should go) into systems defined by closing the loop: see, decide, act, verify. Without waiting for a human at every step. Because only closing that loop automatically — every weekend and every night, without reminders — turns visibility of the problem into real savings.

That is exactly the difference between monitoring and management. The first shows you where the money is. The second goes and gets it.
